Are Jeep Cherokees among the most commonly stolen vehicles?
Jeep Cherokee and Car Theft
On average, around one million cars are stolen annually in the United States, and the Jeep Cherokee sometimes makes the Top Ten list. In 2008 and 2009, for example, the 1996 Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee was the seventh most stolen vehicle in the nation; but, not one Jeep model made the list in 2007 or 2006.And as of this writing the most stolen vehicles for 2010 are:
- Honda Civic (1995)
- Honda Accord (1991)
- Toyota Camry (1989)
- Ford F-150 (1997)
- Chevrolet C/K 1500 (1994)
- Acura Integra (1994)
- Dodge Ram Pickup (2004)
- Nissan Sentra (1994)
- Toyota Pickup (1988)
- Toyota Corolla (2007)
Antitheft Precautions
If you're in the market for a Jeep Cherokee, or any vehicle, you can deter car theft by employing what the NICB refers to as a "layered approach" to auto theft protection. This consists of four layers:- Practice common sense by locking your car and not leaving any valuables inside or in full view.
- Equip a warning device or a car alarm.
- Install an immobilizing device, like a smart key or a fuel cutoff.
- Fit your vehicle with a tracking device.
As added incentive for installing antitheft devices, keep in mind that insurance providers encourage their use. Equipping your vehicle with any type of antitheft deterrent could, depending on your insurance company, reduce your auto insurance rates.
