Exporting a Vehicle

This can be a tricky procedure. Not only are you dealing with state regulations, but also many federal and international rules. And many variables are involved, including if the vehicle is new or used.

To help with the process, here are some general tips:

  • Have all of your documents in order. This includes vehicle registration and title, original bill of sale, proper identification and, depending on your vehicle's status, a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin.
  • Begin the document-gathering process as early as three months before your targeted export date. This way, if needed, you'll have time to request a missing document from the DMV or a dealership.
  • Find a reliable shipping company with a solid reputation.
  • Research beforehand, the custom clearance requirements of your vehicle's country of destination.
  • Before arriving at the Port Authority, save time and confusion by calling ahead for exact directions to where you must present your documents.
  • Don't wrap or containerize your vehicle before U.S. Custom officials inspect it.

Rules for Car Exports

  • If exporting through a land border port, you will need to submit all required documents at least three days prior to the exportation date. On the day of shipping, you must present your car to U.S. Customs for verification purposes and inspection.
  • If exporting via plane or ship, you must present the vehicle and your documents to U. S. Customs at 72 hours prior to lading.
  • If your vehicle's value exceeds $2,500 you must file a Shipper's Export Declaration (SED).

State Rules

You must also adhere to the rules of your state. In New Mexico, for example, exported pick-up trucks must be a minimum of 10 years old and weigh less than 7,054 pounds. While in California you must complete a Certification for Exportation.

For exact export requirements, contact your local DMV and U.S. Customs officials.
