Diesel Cars and Diesel Truck Emissions Testing

This depends on your state. In New York, for example, only diesel engine vehicles with a maximum gross weight (MGV) of 8,501 pounds or heavier must submit to a safety inspection and emissions test. Inspections can only take place at DMV-approved inspection sites equipped with diesel-testing equipment. In Illinois, only certain heavy-duty diesel trucks over 16,000 pounds, are mandated by law to pass a smog check. And in Colorado, diesel cars can only be inspected at stations licensed to test diesels. Otherwise, like all other vehicles in Colorado smog test areas, diesel cars must be inspected every two years.

If you just purchased a diesel-powered vehicle, contact your DMV for assistance. Depending on your state or area, you may be required to pass an emissions test for vehicle registration and/or registration renewal.

The diesel test I just had to take in order to re-register my 2002 TDI VW was a visual inspection only. Here's how it went: 1. Hood opened. 2. Visual inspection of engine 3. Engine started 4. Engine idle speed 5000 rpm 5. Observation of exhaust smoke from tail pipe. 6. Computer output under dshboard connected to smog testers computer. 7. Results transmitted to DMV. The technician told me there is not supposed to be any observable exhaust at 5000 rpm from a distance of 15 feet from the tailpipe. I understand the state of California receives $8.25 from each smog test. As you know, diesel vehicles were exempt from smog testing in California until January 2010. My 2002 VW TDI with 5 speed returned 52 mpg on a 200 mile trip, yesterday. That's about what I've come to expect on a mostly highway driving experience.
