Between packing, changing utility service, and making sure all your mail is correctly forwarded, moving can be a stressful experience. However, it's important not to forget to contact the DMV for relocating information. All states require that drivers keep the address on their license and vehicle registration up to date. Policies vary by location, but you generally have 30 days to update your address after a move.

The address on your driver's license is also the address on your driving record. This is the information that will be used to contact you when your license needs to be renewed or if your driving privileges are ever suspended.

Many people think they only need to inform the DMV of a major move. However, even if you're just moving across town, you should go to the nearest DMV office to request a license with your new address or fill out the change of address form on your state DMV Web site. The new license should be provided free of charge or given for a nominal fee if the sole reason for your request is a relocation.

If you are permanently moving out of state, you will need to follow the appropriate procedure for getting a driver's license from your new home state. In Iowa, for example, you are considered a state resident if you have accepted a permanent job, enrolled your children in public school, lived in Iowa for more than 30 days, or registered to vote. To get an Iowa driver's license after relocation, you must submit proof of identity, proof of residency, proof of Social Security number, and turn in your current driver's license. Testing is generally not needed unless you're applying for a different class of license or your current driver's license is expired.

One thing to consider when contacting the DMV for relocating information is that your vehicle registration and driver's license information typically must be updated separately. In Nebraska, for example, vehicle registration changes are processed at the County Treasurer's office.

Just wanted to say "Thank You" for the info. I've recently moved from California, to Virginia, never have been out of state, so this is very important if I want to drive here! (-: I am permanently disabled, over 55yrs, and have a good driving record. No car yet....just want to be informed and legal. Thanks again, sincerely....
