“Physical Exp Date” on a state driving record is for drivers with commercial licenses only. There is a standard driving record format which the DMV uses for all records, so you may see categories and statuses which do not apply to you. If you do not have a commercial driver’s license, your “Physical Exp Date” column will contain only zeros. However, if you do possess a commercial driver’s license, the date of your last physical will appear in this column on your DMV record.

People who maintain commercial driver’s licenses are required to have a physical exam once every two years; the purpose of requiring a physical is to ensure that drivers are in good health and able to drive without potentially dangerous physical conditions. This information is stored and updated in the motor vehicle driving records in the state which issued your driver’s license.

The “Physical Exp Date” may have dates in it if you did, at one time, possess a commercial driver’s license. This simply shows the last date you passed a physical exam which was reported to the state DMV and will have no impact on your driving record unless you apply for a commercial driver’s license.

If you do have a commercial driver’s license, you may need to check your driving record to ensure that your physical date has not passed. It is important to keep this information current, because without a valid physical every two years, your license will become invalid. You can obtain an instant driving record online or purchase one from your local DMV office by filing the appropriate forms and waiting for your record to arrive in the mail.
