What are the different types of cards/license classes on a driving record?
Your certified driving record may include several classes, and there are different types of cards issued for some classes. For a regular, non-commercial driver’s license you will be issued a standard license which allows you to drive a passenger car. If you have a commercial driver’s license, your driving permissions will be categorized on your personal driving record.
If you are not licensed to drive, you may have a state I.D. card; this will show up on your DMV record under the class heading as “ID Card.” You are allowed to have both an identification card and a driver’s license, and if this is the case they will both appear. A standard driver’s license will appear as “NCDL” – that just means non-commercial driver’s license.
You may have a class A, B, C or M license. Each of these class endorsements allows you to drive a vehicle with different weight limits. Additional cards must be carried when you possess these types of license, and they will be reflected on your state driving record. Additionally, if you are certified to drive a school bus, hazardous materials or carry passengers, your license will be assigned to the appropriate category.
When you obtain driving records, each of your license classes will appear beside the status and the issue date for the license. For example, if you were issued a Class A commercial license, which allows you to transport vehicles weighing 26,001 pounds and tow trailers weighing over 10,001 pounds, your public driving record will reflect that. If you have any restrictions, such as the need for glasses or contacts, they will also be listed beside your license type.
Note: Individual states can label its classifications differently from other states. Check your state's Driver's Handbook to be sure.
