Can I have multiple driving records simultaneously for different states?
No, you cannot have multiple driving records simultaneously in different states. In 2005, Congress passed a law requiring the use of a national database to prevent drivers from getting a license taken away in one state and hopping the border of a neighboring state and getting a new one.
When you are approved for a new driver’s license, the state that approved your application sends a report to the national database. You’ll still be able to check your previous driving records online, by mail or at a DMV in the state you previously held a license for. However, you cannot have more than one driving record at a time – the national database notifies the DMV where you used to live and they update your driving record. Your old license then becomes invalid.
When you move to a new state, you are required to file for a new license (in many states within 30 days). You may need to get a copy of your driving record to ensure that all your information is correct (and there are no surprises) before you apply for a new driver’s license.
You may choose to obtain a certified driving record online before you file for a new license, which can save you considerable time. This may be one of your only options if you have already moved to a new state and need to obtain your driving record from your previous state.
