The traffic infraction or accident you were involved in will determine how long your points stay on your personal driving record. The time periods vary in each state. For example, if you receive a ticket for making an illegal turn in California, the points will stay on your state driving record for three years, while a DUI or hit-and-run will cause the points to remain for ten years.

Some states, like Kentucky, choose to allow points to drop off your record after a period of two years from the date of conviction; however, the violation itself will stay on your record for five years. Insurance companies are allowed to request reports from the past three years, so if you received a ticket four years ago your insurance company is not likely to discover the points on your public driving record.
