Duplicate Title in CA

When you obtain a car in California, you must have the title in order to be the legal owner. If the there is a lost title, then you can apply for a duplicate car title. Get the title figured out before you buy or sell a car.

  1. Complete the Application for Duplicate Title. This form is available on the DMV Web site. You must have both the previous owner and the new owner sign it, and it must be notarized.
  2. Make an appointment at a CA DMV office to get a new title.
  3. Pay the duplicate title fee of $18.

Previous Owner Not On Record

All titles must reflect the true owners of the vehicles. If the person who owned the car and the person who is actually on the title are not the same, then you will have to do provide the DMV with a Bill of Sale for every transaction.

For example, say the car originally belonged to Sally. Sally sold the car to Bob, but Bob did not do a title transfer to his name. Then Bob sold the car to Mary. To get a title, Mary must get a Bill of Sale from Sally to Bob and then from Bob to herself.
