Before you get a salvage title, first determine if that’s what you really need. Salvage titles are different from regular titles - they're even different from junked vehicles.

Definition of a Salvage or Nonrepairable Title

A salvage car is defined as being so damaged that the insurance company decides it will cost more to repair than what the car is worth.  A nonrepairable vehicle is defined by the owner as being only scrap metal.

The insurance company or owner notifies the CA DMV of this and then the title will be a “salvage certificate.” It is actually not a title at all, just a certificate, but sometimes it is referred to as a salvage title instead.

On the other hand, a junked car is from a police impoundment or is taken apart.

If you’re buying used cars, it’s important to get a vehicle history report (VHR) first. A VHR will tell you the complete vehicle history, including if the car has ever been a salvage car. If it’s a rebuilt auto, then the owner might have gotten a new non-salvage title, but the old salvage information will still be in the VHR.

Apply for a Salvage Title

Now that you know whether you need a salvage title, here are the steps to get one:

  1. Make an appointment at a California DMV.
  2. Fill out and sign an Application for Salvage Certificate or Nonrepairable Vehicle Certificate REG 488C. The form may be downloaded from the DMV Web site or picked up at an office.
  3. Show proof of ownership, such as the original title. If there is a loan on the car, the lienholder must sign it. If the title is lost, use an Application for Duplicate Title instead; the lienholders’ signatures must be notarized.
  4. Show any bill of sale that you have.
  5. Pay the $18 fee.
  6. Fill out the mileage on the title if the car is 10 years old or newer.

The DMV employee will then complete a Vehicle Verification form and you’ll give back your license plates.
