FL Car Title Transfer Process for Family Members

Here's how to handle a Florida title transfer between family members:

  1. Get a bill of sale form (available through the FL DHSMV).
  2. Fill out the form and use "gift" as the sales price.
  3. Locate the vehicle's title.
  4. The owner should record the odometer reading.
  5. Write "gift" in the sales price section of the auto title.
  6. Complete the rest of the required title sections.
  7. The buyer and seller should sign and date the title.
  8. The new owner must take the bill of sale, title, and acceptable proof of insurance to a tax collector's office.
  9. Pay the $75.25 title fee.
Florida will handle registrations at the same time as titles, so if the new owner wants to go ahead and register the car, too, he or she should also bring identification.
