Titles and Auto Loans

The New York DMV makes it easy to remove an auto lien from your car title after you pay off your car loan. You first need to obtain from your lienholder proof that your auto loan has been paid in full. This proof must be documented by your lienholder in one of two ways:

  1. A letter on the loan company's official letterhead. This letter must identify your vehicle, indicate that your loan has been satisfied, and be signed by an authorized company official. If your lienholder is an individual, the letter must be notarized.
  2. A completed Notice of Recorded Lien (form MV-901). It must be signed by an authorized company official.

You'll also need to obtain your title certificate.

Once you have these two documents (original copies; photocopies will get your application rejected), mail them, along with a check or money order (made payable to "Commissioner of Motor Vehicles") for $20, to:

Lien Release
NYSDMV Title Services
Department of Motor Vehicles
6 Empire State Plaza
Albany, NY 12228-0331

You should receive in the mail your amended car title, without the lien, within 60 to 90 days. You cannot collect the title in person; by law, the NY DMV must mail out all titles.

It's important to have the lien removed from your title. Down the road, when it comes time to sell your vehicle, it will spare you the hassle of proving the lien has been satisfied, allowing you to focus on other document-related matters like taking care of the title transfer and creating a bill of sale.
