In many states, no vehicle inspection means no vehicle registration. So if you're unsure of your state's inspection rules, call your local DMV office. A DMV agent will direct you to a Web site and/or give you a phone number. Or, if you know of a state-approved vehicle inspection station in your area, stop by and inquire if someone there can answer your car inspection questions.

It's to your advantage to know the rules before taking your vehicle in for an inspection. Vermont's DMV's Web site, for example, in addition to providing a listing of state-approved car inspection stations, also includes a lengthy checklist of what mechanics will be inspecting. Knowing this kind of information can save you time and possibly money by having your vehicle repaired prior to the inspection date.
