Duplicate Title in North Carolina

Getting a duplicate title is not like having a title transfer. If you have a lost title, you can get a new one, but you can’t make any changes to what was on the original. For example, if you got married and changed your name since you lost your title, you can’t put your married name on the duplicate title. You’ll have to get a substitute title for that change.

To replace a car title:

  • Find a notary.
  • Get the Application for a Duplicate Title (MVR-4) from the DMV website and sign it in the presence of a notary. No name changes or other changes can be made; everything must be the same as it was on the original title. No Bill of Sale is required.
  • Make an appointment at a NC DMV office and bring in the title application, or mail it to:
N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles
3148 Mail Service Center
Raleigh, NC 27699-3148
  • Pay the $15.00 duplicate title fee.

Titles with Liens

The lien holder must fill out the lien holder section of the application with a notary, or give you a lien release form (MVR-8, also available on the North Carolina DMV Web site, which also needs notarization).

Application Aging

The state requires all of these duplicate title applications to sit, or age, for 15 days to ensure that the old title doesn’t show up in the meantime.
