Title Transfers When Buying Used Cars
If you just bought a used vehicle, you'll need to apply for a car title, in person, at any New Jersey MVC office. When you arrive, you'll need to provide the following:- The title. Be sure to sign it and include your NJ driver license number.
- Proof of car insurance.
- A completed Application for Certificate of Ownership.
- Cash, check, or credit card to pay sales tax, if applicable, and a $60 title transfer fee ($85 with a lien).

Before settling on a used car, be sure to check its vehicle history. You can do this, for a small fee, by ordering a vehicle history report from a variety of sources. This report will give you all the facts about the car, including:- Accident history.
- Number of owners.
- Airbag deployment.
- Flood or hail damage.
- Any history as a rental car or taxi.
- Odometer readings.
- State emissions inspection results.
