Title Transfers When Selling Used Cars

The title transfer process is rather simple. Before you hand over the title, first take time to remove your New Jersey license plates from the vehicle. You can then transfer the plates to another vehicle that's owned by you. If you elect not to transfer, you must surrender the plates to any NJ MVC office.

After removing the plates, you'll need to complete the car title by including:

  • The buyer's name and address.
  • The date of sale.
  • The vehicle's odometer reading.
  • The sale price.
  • Your signature.

No bill of sale is required when transferring titles, although it's always wise to make a copy for your records. The title must be transferred to the buyer within 10 working days from the date of sale. Failure to do so could result in a $25 fine.

Sell Car Tips

Before selling your used car, order a vehicle history report. This handy report will detail your car's entire vehicle history, touching on everything from emissions test results to complete service records. Showing proof of a vehicle history report will immediately establish trust with a potential buyer and expedite the selling process.
