Before making a name change on your auto title, you must first change your name on your New Jersey drivers license. Once this has been noted in the MVC database, the MVC will automatically update its files on other vehicle-related documents under your name.

Name Change on Drivers Licenses

You must report any name change, regardless of reason, to the New Jersey MVC within two weeks of your new identity. Failure to notify can result in fines ranging from $25 to $500.

To change the name on your drivers license, you must visit an MVC office in person. Be sure to have:

  • Proof of address.
  • 6 Points of ID Verification. If you have not received a new Social Security card reflecting your name change, call the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.
  • Your current drivers license.
  • Proper documentation (marriage certificate, divorce decree, adoption papers, court documents) depending on the reason for your name change.

Name Change on Titles

Once your drivers license is updated, you're free to change your auto title. However, according to MVC officials, this is not required, even for title transfer purposes.

But if you are set on updating your car title, you must apply for a duplicate title by visiting any NJ MVC office with:

  • A completed Application for Duplicate Certificate of Ownership. You can download the form from the MVC's Web site or you can have the MVC send you one by calling (888) 486-3339.
  • Your current registration certificate or insurance identification card (no bill of sale required).
  • The lien release, if applicable.
  • Cash, a check, a money order, or a credit card (MasterCard, American Express, Visa) to pay the $60 duplicate title fee.
Remember, do not submit a duplicate application until AFTER you change your name on your driver license.
