Is there a late fee or penalty for expired vehicle registration in Illinois? Illinois
Car Registration Late Fees and Penalties
Tardiness is costly in Illinois. Especially when it comes to an expired vehicle registration. The IL Secretary of State (SOS) will charge you a $20 late fee if you attempt to renew your car registration after it has been expired for 30 days or more. A minor penalty, compared to the traffic ticket you'll receive if caught driving with an expired registration.Registration renewal cards are mailed approximately 60 days prior to your registration's expiration date, giving you plenty of time to renew in a timely fashion and avoid a late fee. You can renew online, in person, by phone or mail. You also have the option to renew at participating banks, credit unions, currency exchanges and savings and loans.
