Replacing Lost Titles

Replacing a lost Illinois car title is a breeze. First, you'll need to grab an Application for Vehicle Transaction(s) (VSD 190) from any Secretary of State (SOS) office, or by calling (800) 252-8980.

When completing this application, be sure to:

  • Check the box for Duplicate Title, located in the application's top section.
  • Write the exact vehicle identification number (VIN).
  • Include the odometer reading, if applicable.
  • Sign your name.

Take your time when completing this form. The application will be returned if any information is missing.

Submit the completed application, along with a check or money order to pay the $95 title fee, to any SOS office, or by mailing to:

Office of Secretary of State
Vehicle Records Processing Division
501 S. Second St., Room 424
Springfield, IL 62756-6666

No bill of sale is required.

Making a title transfer is difficult when there's a lost title. To avoid delays when selling your vehicle, it's a good idea to have a duplicate title in your possession. Keep in mind that duplicate titles are not issued within 15 days from the issuance of an original title, or 30 days from the issuance of a duplicate title.
