When gifting a car, what is required to transfer the title in IL? Illinois
Transferring Titles for Vehicles as Gifts
If you obtain a vehicle as a gift, you'll follow the same the title transfer steps as you would a regular transaction between a buyer and seller.
Seller
If you're the "seller" (the generous one gifting the vehicle):- Sign and print your name on the title.
- Record the vehicle's odometer reading and the date of sale on the back of the title.
- Remove the license plates.
No bill of sale is required.
Buyer
If you're the "buyer" (the fortunate one receiving the car as a gift):- Sign and print your name on the title.
- Confirm that all of the car title information - such as the odometer reading and VIN - is accurate.
- Complete an Application for Vehicle Transaction(s) (Form VSD 190). You can't download this form; you must get one from any Secretary of State (SOS) office or call (800) 252-8980 to request one.
- Complete tax form RUT-50 and write a check or money to pay the use tax fee (payable to Illinois Department of Revenue). If you're receiving the vehicle from a family member, you'll only owe $15; otherwise, the use tax will be based on the vehicle's age.
- Write a check or money order to pay the $95 title fee (payable to Illinois Secretary of State).
Drop off all documents and payments to any SOS office or mail everything to:
Secretary of State
Vehicle Services Department
501 S. Second St., Room 014
Springfield, IL 62756
The SOS mails out all titles. You should receive your car title in about six weeks.
