There are two ways to accomplish this matter once you've satisfied the terms of your car loan.

Electronic Lien and Title Transfer

The RMV uses an Electronic Lien and Title (ELT) program that allows lienholders to electronically alert the agency when an auto loan is satisfied. At that point, the RMV releases the lien and automatically prints and sends the title to the new owner.

Paper Notice from Lienholder

After paying off your auto loans, you can also submit a lien release on original letterhead from the lienholder to the RMV in order to be given your car title. The RMV won't accept photocopies or faxes.

Contact the RMV at (800) 858-3926 for more information about titles and lien releases.
