You'll first need to gather a bunch of paperwork as part of this title process, including:

  • The salvage title.
  • A completed application for inspection form (available online through the RMV).
  • The insurance company's appraisal report (call the insurer for details about this).
  • Receipts for the parts added to the vehicle (be sure to list the VIN from the part's original car, if applicable).
Once you have the paperwork ready, proceed to a RMV station and pay a $50 inspection fee. After you've completed this step, go to a salvage inspection station. (Yes, the fee must be paid before you visit the station.) You don't need an inspection appointment.

If your car passes the inspection, you can apply for a registration. Please note the salvage inspection isn't meant to determine the safety of your vehicle. Your car will need to undergo a safety and emissions inspection within seven days of registering the vehicle.

Have any more questions about salvage titles? Call the RMV at (617) 351-9060.

Dealing With a Rebuilt Auto or Used Cars

Before purchasing a used car or rebuilt auto, you should consider purchasing a vehicle history report (VHR). As the name implies, this review allows you to look into the vehicle history - such as the number of owners, accident history, etc. - and can give you a better feel for what you may be getting for your money.
