Removing a Lien from a Georgia Title

Contact the Georgia (GA) Motor Vehicles Division (MVD) after you pay off your car loan. The MVD will process your paperwork and remove the auto lien from the car title on your motor vehicle.

Data that you must provide to staff at the MVD office is:

  • Signature of the lienholder (i.e. bank official).
  • First and last name of the lienholder (name must match the name listed on the original title).
  • Date that the auto loan was paid off.
It takes about five business days to receive updated titles. If there are additional lienholders who have not been paid in full listed on the title, they must receive the updated title as well. After you pay off those additional auto loans, return to the GA MVD to remove the names of the additional lienholders from the title.

Fill out a Lien or Security Interest Form if the title cannot be found. Information that you will provide on the form includes:

  • Your first and last names.
  • Your street mailing address (including city, state, and zip code).
  • Vehicle identification number.
  • Lienholder’s name and street mailing address (including city, state, and zip code).
The lienholder is required to sign the form to complete the title transfer.

GA MVD offices are open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Offices are closed for major holidays.
