Replacing lost or stolen car tags with a current car registration is straightforward.  To get new stickers or car tags:

  • Make an appointment for quicker service at the California DMV Web site.
  • Fill out Application for Replacement Plates, Stickers, Documents (REG 156) from the DMV Web site.
  • Bring in your ID. If the address of record is different than the address on your ID card, then you’ll also need to bring in either your vehicle registration card or title; a police report for stolen tags or plates; or a CHP vehicle verification, if other replacement license plates were issued within the last 90 days.
