Duplicate or Substitute Plates

In California, you must have both a front license plate and a back license plate. If either gets stolen or damaged, get replacements.

First, a little lingo: These new replacement license plates will be called either “duplicate plates” or “substitute plate.” Duplicates are just regular, standard issue license plates. Substitute plates are replacements for personalized or special interest plates, such as the POW plates.

Replacement Process

To replace your CA license plates, you’ll need to:

  1. Schedule an appointment on the CA DMV Web site to come into a California DMV office.
  2. Complete Application for Replacement Plates, Stickers, Documents (REG 156), available on DMV Web site.
  3. Go into your appointment and bring:
    • Your ID.
    • The damaged plate, if you have it, and the plate that you still have (unless both fell off or both were stolen). You’ll have to turn in what you have left.
    • The applicable fee (see below).

Additionally, if you have changed your address but not told the DMV before, then also show one of these:

  • Registration card or title.
  • Police report for stolen tags or plates.
  • CHP vehicle verification (given if other replacement license plates were issued within the last 90 days).

Fees

  • Regular plate: $18
  • Specialized or personalized plates: Depends on the exact type of plate. The CA DMV Web site lists the prices on its online order form.
