Replacement License Plate Fees

The license plate replacement fee is $18, but for specialized or personalized plates, the fee varies depending on the plate. The CA DMV Web site lists these fees on its online order form.

Note that for standard-issue CA license plates where you don’t choose any customization, you will not have to repay the registration fees.

You must replace your plates in person at the DMV.

Front License Plate

Unlike some other states, California law requires that all cars have a front license plate. Not having this front plate will get you a traffic ticket. This is true even if your car was made to not hold a front license plate. Purchase an adaptor kit and screw on a front license plate if your car wasn't made to hold a front license plate.
