Replacing Cars Tags and License Plates

Before applying for a replacement license plate sticker with the GA MVD, you first must file a report with the police.

Next, visit your local tag station with the following:

  • A completed Application for a Replacement License Plate and/or Renewal Decal (Form MV-7). You can download this from the MVD's Web site or obtain one from any tag office. If you decide to complete the form while at the tag office, have your Georgia drivers license or identification card and your vehicle's make, model, and VIN.
  • Either the police report or a completed Report of Lost, Stolen, or Mutilated License Plate and/or Renewal Decal (Form T-158).
  • Mutilated vehicle registration sticker, if applicable.
  • Cash or a check or money order for $8 (make check payable to "Office of the Tax Commissioner").

Be sure to apply for a replacement car registration sticker as soon as possible. You can be ticketed and fined if you're stopped driving without a license plate sticker, regardless of the circumstance.
