Front License Plate

Georgia is a one of 20 states in the country that requires only one license plate. This plate must be fastened to the rear of the vehicle and display a current vehicle registration sticker. The GA MVD offers a vast variety of license plates to choose from, including a long list of special interest plates championing schools, causes, sports teams and more.

To drive legally in Georgia, you must renew your license plate annually. The state will mail you a registration renewal form before your car registration's expiration date. On it you'll find complete renewal instructions and your fee. Depending on your county, you may have the option to renew online. Otherwise you can renew at your local tag office, or by mail. If your registration is on the cusp of expiring, renew at a tag office. You'll receive your registration certificate and license plate decal immediately. If you're caught driving with expired plates, you will be ticketed and fined.
