Car Registration and License Plate Grace Period

The New York DMV does not impose a late fee if you miss renewing your vehicle registration on time. However, this does not mean you should ignore updating your car registration and license plates in a timely manner. You will be penalized in the form of a traffic ticket if you're caught by law enforcement driving with an expired DMV registration

The DMV sends out registration renewal forms 45 to 60 days prior to your registration's renewal. With this form you can easily renew your car registration online, by phone, by mail, or at any NY DMV location. If your vehicle registration is on the verge of expiring, renew in-person. You'll receive your new DMV registration immediately. If you renew via the other options, your new registration and license plate sticker(s) won't arrive in your mailbox until two weeks later.
