Personalized Plates and Vanity Plates
Before ordering a custom plate, be aware that the NY DMV will not honor your personalized plate request if:- It does not have at least one letter.
- It has letters or numbers arranged in a format reserved for specific classes of vehicles other than passenger cars.
- It matches that reserved for historical vehicles.
- It consists of six numbers followed by one letter.
- It is found to be lewd, obscene, offensive, or derogatory.
- It creates the false sense your vehicle is operating in an official capacity for a governmental department or function.
To spare yourself of disappointment, be sure to check if your custom plate idea is available before ordering. You can do this online (found on the New York DMV's Web site) or by calling (518) 402-4838.
Ordering Personalized and Vanity Plates
Professional, emergency services, and several other organization plates may have to be ordered directly through the organization itself, or through the Custom Plates Unit.Order by Phone
When ordering specialty plates be aware that you will be required to explain what your combination means or what it represents.
To order, call (518) 402-4838 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. When you do, have at the ready:
- Your current vehicle registration.
- A valid credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express) to pay personalized plate fee (see fees below).

- Download and complete Order Form for Personalize Plates of Cause, Organization, Regional, Colleges and Fraternities or Sports Picture Plates (Form CP-62.1).
- Write a check for the proper fee (see below).

- New York State Regions/Tourism: $60/$91.25
- Most Organizations: $60/$91.25
The fees for Personalized Empire Gold Plate (standard) are:
- Passenger and Commercial Plates: $60
- Motorcycles: $35
