Fees for Personalized Plates, Vanity Plates and Specialty Plates

You will pay a higher license plate fee for a custom plate than you would if you were ordering standard license plates.

The fees for Personalized Empire Gold Plates (standard plates) are:

  • Passenger and Commercial Vehicles: $60
  • Motorcycles: $35
The fees for Custom Picture Plates are:

  • Sports Teams: $60 or $91.25 for personalized plate
  • New York State Regions/Tourism: $60 or $91.25 for personalized plate
  • Most Organizations: $60 or $91.25 for personalized plate

The above fees only reflect plate costs. They do not incorporate vehicle registration charges.

Ordering a Custom License Plate

You can't order a custom license plate at the DMV; you must order it either by mail or by phone.

You're limited to eight characters for a standard-sized license, and six-characters for a smaller motorcycle plate, and NY officials have final say on whether or not your personalized plate request will be honored. Your order will be denied if your sequence of license plate characters is deemed as lewd, offensive or derogatory.
