Am I required to display a front license plate in New York? New York
Front and Back License Plates
All New York passenger cars and commercial vehicles require two license plates: one front license plate and one back license plate. Motorcycles and small trailers are the exceptions, requiring only one NY license plate displayed in the rear.Receiving and Renewing Your License Plates
If your vehicle is new, you'll receive your New York license plates during the vehicle registration process. If you order customized license plates, you'll be issued a temporary plate until your permanent plates arrive in the mail. You must, by NY law, renew your plates annually. The DMV will send you a registration renewal notice approximately 45 days prior to your expiration date, giving you plenty of time to renew on time. If caught driving with an expired registration, you will be ticketed.
