Fees to Replace License Plates or Car Tags

To get a duplicate sticker or license plate (or both at the same time), North Carolina charges:

  • A fee of $15 for the duplicate.
  • A variable notary fee at the NC DMV office. (Your application for a replacement must be notarized at the DMV.)

As stated, the fee to have your application might vary, but don't let this cause a budget panic. You will not have to pay a new round of vehicle registration fees.

Keep in mind that the duplicate plates or stickers will have the same old expiration date as the old plates. Getting new ones won't change your registration periods; you will still have to renew the car registration at the same time.
