License Plate Duplicates

North Carolina allows drivers to replace their license plates with a few steps. It will take a visit to the DMV.

  1. Schedule an appointment at a DMV (Vehicle and Plate Renewal) office.
  2. Complete the Application for Replacement of Plate or Sticker (MV-18) from the NC DMV Web site.
  3. Show your insurance proof.
  4. Remit the $15 fee, as well as the additional fee you'll pay to have the application notarized.
Remember, there is no front license plate requirement in North Carolina; the state only issues one license plate and you must attach it to the rear of your vehicle.

Losing a License Plate Out of State

Should you be out of North Carolina when you lose your license plate, you can still get a replacement plate. Just follow these steps:

  1. Fill out MV-18, Application for Replacement of Plate or Sticker from the NC DMV Web site. (There’s a place at the bottom to write down your vehicle description; make sure to fill this out.)
  2. Have the form notarized.
  3. Mail this and a check or money order for $15 to:
The Division of Motor Vehicles
3148 Mail Service Center
Raleigh, NC  27699-3148

Reporting a Stolen License Plate
