How do I order personalized plates and vanity plates in North Carolina? North Carolina

Specialty Plates and Vanity Plates

North Carolina allows its drivers to order:

  • A custom license plate with the regular NC logo on it.
  • A specialty plate for an organization with random number and letter sequence.
  • A specialty plate with customized letters, numbers, or symbols.

Specialized Plate Choices

There are multiple specialty plate options. For example, drivers can choose from among license plates for civic clubs, colleges, and military branches, as well as sports plates like the state's NASCAR fan plate.

The nice thing about these license plates is that, in most cases, North Carolina returns a portion of the proceeds to the organization. The amount is listed next to the plate. Browse through the many selections available on the NC DMV website.

For certain plates, you must be prepared to show proof of qualification, upon request. Examples include military plates such as “Veteran of Foreign Wars” or “Army Veteran.”  However, you may still order these online.

Ordering a Custom Plate

Choose one method to order a personalized plate:

  • Online. The NC DMV has an online ordering system where you can choose any of the license plates and customize them if you wish. Remember that you may not choose a license plate someone else has nor any vulgar words.
  • A DMV Vehicle and License Renewal office. Make an appointment for quicker service. Bring proof of qualification, if applicable.
  • By mail (see below).

Mail Orders

To request a plate by mail, retrieve the specific specialty or custom plate application from the NC DMV Web site in the Forms section. The fee for your plate will be listed. Then mail the fee (check or money order) and the application to:

NC DMV, Special License Unit
3155 Mail Service Center
Raleigh, NC 27699-3155

The customization fee is $30 and the specialty plate fee varies depending on the plate. If you want this customized, pay an extra $30.

Fees for personalized plates are on top of regular registration fees.
