Custom Plate Fees

The fee for all vanity plates and personalized plates is an extra $30 on top of your regular registration fees and the specialty plate charge, if you get a specialty plate. You may order the personalized plate in the middle of your year, and pay just the $30.

Fees for Specialty Plates

There are literally dozens of specialty plates available in the state of North Carolina - everything from being a fan of Ducks Unlimited to military veterans to sports teams. The NC DMV Web site lists these plates by category or alphabetically in an easy-to-use database.

As you're choosing your license plate, keep in mind:

  • The fees for these license plates vary.
  • Specialty license plates fees are in addition to the standard registration fees, not instead of.
  • A custom license plate costs an extra $30.

Also, some of the proceeds from many of these plates go to the organization or school with which the plates are affiliated. For example, Ducks Unlimited charges $20, $10 of which goes to the Wildlife Commission. Duke University charges $25 and the state gives Duke $15.
