Renewing License Plates and Car Tags

New Jersey does not issue license plate decals for passenger vehicles. It stopped in 2004. Only motorcycles and commercial vehicles are required to sport DMV registration decals on the back license plate.

This does not mean, however, that you can let your vehicle registration lag. You are still required to renew your car registration in a timely fashion.

To help you remember, the MVC sends out a registration renewal form approximately 60 days before your DMV registration expires. You can use this form to renew online, by phone, by mail, or in person at any NJ MVC location.

TIP: If your car registration is on the verge of expiring, renew in-person. You'll receive your updated car registration immediately. This is important. You don't want to drive with an expired vehicle registration. If caught, you will be issued a ticket and fined.
