No More New Jersey License Plate Car Tags

The New Jersey MVC stopped issuing car registration decals for license plates in 2004, so if you have a license plate sticker from back then that has fallen off, you're still legal. You do not need to order a replacement.

All you need to worry about is keeping your vehicle registration up to date by renewing it on time. You will be ticketed if caught driving with an expired car registration.

Registration Renewal and Fees

The MVC will mail you a registration renewal form about 60 days before your vehicle registration's expiration date. On it you'll find your registration fee, as well as renewal information. You can use it to renew online, by mail, by phone, or in person at any NJ MVC location.

HINT: Renew in-person if your car registration is about to expire. You'll receive a new registration certificate immediately. Otherwise, if you order online, for example, you'll have to wait two weeks.
