Replace Front License Plate and/or Back License Plate

If one or both of your New Jersey license plates have gone missing, you'll need to apply for new plates at any NJ MVC location. You must do this as soon as possible. You cannot drive a vehicle without license plates

Here's what to do:

  1. Complete a Vehicle Registration/Plate Status Form (BA-1). This form will serve as verification that you notified the MVC. File this form in a safe place.
  2. Provide proof of registration.
  3. Use cash or a check or credit card (MasterCard, Visa, American Express) to pay $6 standard plate fee, or $11 for non-personalized specialty plate.

If you have a hunch that the license plates were stolen, notify the police.
