Replacement License Plate Fees

If either or both of your license plates disappear, you'll need to obtain replacements immediately. If you attempt to drive without license plates, you will be ticketed, regardless of the circumstances.

To apply, visit any NJ MVC office with:

  • A completed Form BA-1 (Vehicle Registration/Plate Status Form).
  • Proof of vehicle registration.
  • Cash or a check or credit card (American Express, MasterCard, Visa) to pay the $6 fee for standard plates, or $11 for non-personalized specialty plates.

New Jersey requires two license plates - a front license plate and a back license plate - for all passenger cars. You cannot drive with only one plate.

If you believe your license plates were stolen, be sure to notify the police.
