New Jersey License Plate Positions

The answer depends on the type of vehicle you're driving and/or towing. All passenger car cars and commercial vehicles receive two New Jersey license plates - a front license plate and a rear license plate. Motorcycles, motorized bicycles, and trailers require only one license plate, to be positioned on the back.

Keep Your Vehicle Registration Current

Be sure to keep your license plates legal by renewing your vehicle registration in a timely fashion. The NJ MVC sends out registration renewal notices approximately two months prior to your car registration's expiration date. With this form you can renew online, by phone, by mail, or in person. You will not be fined if you miss your registration's expiration date. You will be ticketed, however, if caught by law enforcement driving with an expired vehicle registration.

In addition, you will be fined if your license plate is obscured by dirt. It's your responsibility to keep your license plate or plates clean.
