Ordering Specialty Plates, Vanity Plates, and Personalized Plates

Before pinning your heart to a specific custom license plate, keep in mind that the Illinois Secretary of State (SOS) has personalized plate restrictions. You cannot:

  • Use foreign words, symbols, or punctuation.
  • Have a custom plate considered offensive or obscene.
  • Intermix letters and numbers.
  • Use lower case letters.
  • Have a space between numbers.

Also, make sure you know what you're ordering. Illinois distinguishes between personalized and vanity plates. A personalized plate uses both letters and numbers, while a vanity plate features either numbers only (up to three) or letters only (up to seven).

How to Apply

  1. Complete a Vanity/Personalize Plates Application. You can download this from the SOS's Web site, pick one up at any SOS office, or request an application by phone at (800) 252-8980.
  2. Write a check for your license plate amount (fees vary by plate).
  3. Mail to:
Secretary of State
Special Plates Division
501 S. Second St., Room 532
Springfield, IL 62756

The Special Plates Division will notify you by mail within four to six weeks if your custom plate request has been accepted. If your current license plates will expire while you're waiting to hear from the Special Plates Division, you will need to renew your registration.
