Is there a grace period for expired license plates or Pennsylvania vehicle registration? Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania Vehicle Registration

There is no grace period for renewing your vehicle registration and license plates in PA.

If your address is current with PennDOT, you will receive early notice of your registration renewal and can process the renewal online. Your renewed car registration and license plate stickers should arrive in the mail within 10 business days of submission.

Make sure to always renew in a timely manner because driving on an expired registration subjects you to possible tickets, penalties, and fines.

Renew Your Car Registration Online

Whether or not you have received your official registration renewal notice from PennDOT, you can renew online quickly and easily. Visit the PennDOT Web site with the following information:

  • Title number.
  • License plate number.
  • Drivers license number.
  • Insurance policy number and effective dates.
You will also need a valid credit card to pay the $36 fee, and a printer to print a receipt and temporary registration that keeps you legal until your permanent DMV registration arrives in the mail.
