Pennsylvania Front License Plate

No. Pennsylvania issues single license plates, and you are required to display one license plate on the rear of your vehicle. Front license plates are not required.

Rules about front license plate display vary from state to state, so be alert to your local laws to avoid possible ticketing and fines.

Replacement License Plates

In 2008, PennDOT stopped issuing new license plates every 10 years. Now, if you lose a plate or believe your plate is sufficiently defaced as to be illegible, you may request a new replacement free of charge. The technician at your annual safety inspection may alert you to the need for a replacement plate and provide a postcard that you mail in to PennDOT to begin the process. In PA, your plate must be fully identifiable at a distance of 50 feet.

To obtain a replacement plate, go to the PennDOT website and complete Form MV-44.
