You can obtain replacement license plates/car tags by stopping by a full-service MA RMV branch and ordering them for $10 per plate. Or, you can do the same by calling (617) 351-4500 or (800) 858-3926 and paying your fee with a MasterCard, Discover Card, or Visa.

However, if both plates need to be replaced, you must use the in-person option; you'll be given a temporary license plate permit until your plates arrive. Also, if both plates are missing, you'll have to get another set with new numbers.

You can't replace a green plate with the same number. If your single green plate is lost or stolen, you'll get a set of the red plates instead.

Keep Your Vehicle Registration Current

Keep in mind it's illegal to drive without any license plates or with an invalid car registration/vehicle registration/stickers. You could be cited by Massachusetts law enforcement officers for doing so, and be forced to pay a heavy fine.
