It costs $10 per license plate to replace lost, missing, or damaged MA car tags.

If you need to replace both license plates, you must take care of this matter at a RMV full-service location. If you need to replace a single plate. you can do so in person or by calling the RMV at  (617) 351-4500 or (800) 858-3926. Those who use the phone option can pay their fee with a MasterCard, Discover Card, or Visa.

Also, if you need both plates, you'll have to get another set with new numbers.

Additionally, you can't replace a green plate with the same number. If your green plate is lost or stolen, you'll get a new red plate.

Quickly Replace Your License Plate

Don't drive without any license plates, or with an outdated car registration or vehicle registration. You risk being nailed by Massachusetts police with a traffic ticket, as well as a hefty fine that likely will far outweigh the registration renewal fees. The same applies for those driving with expired or missing registration stickers.
