Replacement License Plate Fees

Massachusetts provides replacement license plates for a fee of $10 each, whether you're dealing with a lost, stolen, or damaged plate.

Keep in mind you need to have a rear and a front license plate on your vehicle. If you don't, you could be stopped by MA law enforcement and given a ticket and fine.

To replace your license plate, go to a full-service RMV branch and request a replacement. You'll receive a temporary plate, which will keep your car legal until the actual plate arrives. You may also get your replacement by phone by calling (617) 351-4500 or (800) 858-3926.

However, those who need to replace both license plates must do so in person and not by phone. You'll receive your plates with new numbers.

Contact the RMV if you have any other questions about replacement license plate fees.
