Ordering Custom Plates in MA

You can order these license plates - which go by various names, including vanity plates, personalized plates, and custom plates - in person at a RMV office or by mail. (These plates differ from specialty plates, which have various plate designs.)

No matter which method you choose, you must fill out an Application for Vanity Plates. Those who opt for the mail method should send the form to the address listed on the form, along with a check for the $50 payment for the personalized plate or plates.

When the plates are ready in about 12 weeks, you'll receive a notice. Then, you'll need to pick up your custom plate or plates at a RMV office. Bring an RMV-3 form stamped by your insurer, your old plates, and payment for a $20 swap fee.

MA Custom License Plate Notes

  • They must begin with two letters.
  • You can't use more than six characters.
  • You can't intermix letters and numbers.
  • You can check the availability of your combination on the RMV Vanity Plate page.
