MA Custom Plate Fee

Whether you call it a custom plate, personalized plate, or a vanity plate (the proper name for it in Massachusetts), these plates cost an extra $50. But, don't confuse vanity plates with specialty plates, which are plates with different background designs.

You can order your custom license plate in person at a RMV office or by mail. Either way, you'll have to complete the Application for Vanity Plates form. If you opt for the mail option, just send the form to the address listed, and be sure to include a check for the $50 fee.

MA Vanity Plate Rules

Here's a few things to keep in mind about vanity plates:

  • They must start with two letters.
  • They can contain a maximum of six characters.
  • Letters and numbers can't be intermixed.
  • You can verify if anyone else has the combination you covet by visiting the RMV's Vanity Plate page.
Allow up to 12 weeks to have the personalized plates made. You'll receive notification when they're ready. No matter how you ordered your vanity plates, you must pick them up at a RMV branch. When you go, bring a Form RMV-3 that's been stamped by your auto insurer, payment for a $20 swap fee, and your old license plates.

Have any questions about license plate fees or other registration matters? Call the RMV at (617) 351-4500.
