Yes. Like most states, Massachusetts law requires vehicle owners to have both a rear and a front license plate on their cars.

Need Replacement License Plates?

If you need to replace a MA license plate, you can do so at a RMV full-service office for $10. You'll be given a temporary plate until the new one arrives. You can also call (617) 351-4500 or (800) 858-3926 to get a new plate. If you have to replace both plates, you must go to a full-service office and pay $20 for plates with new numbers.

Keep in mind that driving without the required plates can result in a traffic ticket and fine.

Have any more questions about getting a replacement license plate? Contact the RMV at the numbers listed above, or stop by a RMV full-service branch.
